“Immortal Species” Solo show by Tom Kelly
From April 13 to July 31,Arish artist Tom Kelly’s photographic exhibition “Immortal Species — Unicorns, Crocodiles and Whales” was displayed at Gengdan Institute. The exhibition presented nearly 30 large-format thematic photographs, aiming to arouse people’s attention and thinking about plastics in the ocean.
Mr. Kelly is a graduate of the School of Media, Arts and Design at the University of Westminster, London. He has worked in graphic design and photography for many years. His works were published in many international publications and three of his published books were about the Irish landscape. He has applied practical experience to education, including teaching at Dublin Institute of Technology and Gengdan Institute of Beijing University of Technology, and opening underwater photography at the Lanzarote Diving Academy, Spain.
The exhibition showed a series of photographs taken by Mr. Kelly during his diving trips over the past three years, including various discarded plastic toys in the ocean. These broken pieces of plastics created a different kind of “life” on the seafloor, an active “species” by the movement of water and tides.
Mr. Kelly shows us the unique charm and diversity of underwater seascapes through photography but at the same time these visual wonders and beauty make viewers think about the destructive role of plastics in the ocean: where do these plastics come from, where do they land, and how much will we have to pay in order to integrate them into the new nature? The shocking impact of the photographs touches the eyes and the heart, and reawakens people’s awe and respect for nature.
